Homemade Goodness
Like me, you've probably heard the buzz about homemade laundry soap. This isn't news to me, though. For many years, I was blessed with Old Order Amish neighbors who made their own cleaning products (and well - practically everything else). Many of them make lye soap (which I don't care for due to its harshness). This new trend uses old fashioned ingredients (you know I love that!) found at your grocery store. The price is ridiculously low compared to store bought detergent, works just as well (if not better), is gentle enough for your delicate laundry items, and smells super fresh.
1 cup 20 Mule Team Borax
1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
1 bar Fels-Naptha soap
Using a box grater (or hand-held grater) shave the bar of soap into a medium bowl, add the borax and washing soda. Stir well.
Use 1 tablespoon per regular load, and 2 tablespoons per heavily soiled load.
This recipe makes enough for 64 regular loads, 32 heavily soiled loads. And 1 recipe uses only a little of the washing soda and borax.....with plenty left over for more batches.

*Notes:
-
Walmart prices for these ingredients:
-
Washing soda $ 4.96
-
Borax $3.96
-
Fels Naptha soap $3.86
-
That's $12.78. And that's just for 1 recipe...lots more washing soda & borax left.

I had to train myself to use only the 1 tablespoon per load. I thought "It can't really work this well". I was wrong.....it does!
-
I've made this using both Dove and Ivory soap instead of the Fels Naptha and it worked just as well.
-
The fresh smell is truly remarkable. It's just clean, simple, and I've not found a commercial detergent which smells as good.

Find a pretty vintage jar or container, fill it with homemade laundry soap and what a great gift you have for the Homemade Goodness maniac in your life.
